training fruit trees
« on: November 15, 2012, 19:10 »
Hi All,
I am looking to train my fruit trees along 1 side of the allotment and need some help with  a few things. The side is 35ft long and I have 2 of each apple, pear and plum, i want to train them to a t shaped cordon with a 2 tiers being the final size(they are all on dwarf rootstock).

1) Can I comfortably put all 6 trees on that 1 side
2) How many trees between posts - it will be 8ft posts sunk 2ft down held with postcrete,I will be using heavy tension wire and the wire tightening things
3) should it be both trees side by side or does't it matter
4) I was looking to train them to 4ft and 6ft is this ok?

thanks
dmg

I'm trying to picture this, but I wonder do you mean espalier trees with the first branch at 4ft and the 2nd at 6ft, rather than as a double cordon where the 2 branches make a more upright U shape

There's good training info HERE

and HERE

The closest advised spacing is 12 ft apart, more if the tree is more vigorous so you might have to find another area for the remaining trees.

The links above are for espaliers whereas cordons can be grown much closer together, RHS says 2ft - 3ft apart  ;)
RHS cordon

Hi thanks for the replies,
mum, sorry it is espalier that i want to train them as I keep getting the 2 mixed up.
trillium, that was a very useful website, thanks.

I will just put 3 on either side of the plot if they need so much space.

Thanks again
