Title: Hen with swollen abdomen
Post by: Miss Bean on April 19, 2010, 20:23
I've been away for the last week and not able to tell whether Henrietta has been laying or not, but tonight I noticed that her abdomen was looking rather large and clearly visible below the perch. I had a quick feel and the swelling is rather warm and squashy.

I thought today when she was patrolling the garden that she was walking a bit strangely, but other than that she looks healthy and was certainly grazing as normal.

Could she be egg bound?

I can't answer your query but I seem to remember seeing threads on this problem before and it's quite serious. I think you might need a trip to the vet. Hopefully someone with experience of this can give you a better answer soon.

The good news and the bad news… I'll start with the bad!

I can't find anything that relates to my chook so I've no idea if action is required or not. The good news is that the swelling has reduced somewhat after she laid a MASSIVE egg on Tuesday and then again yesterday. Also on Tuesday there was a lot of squidgy egg shell on the floor of the coop, so I'm wondering if she had a temporary blockage that just caused her to blow up a bit.

I'll keep an eye on her!
