Heather ale
« on: July 30, 2009, 06:50 »
I've never brewed anything in my life but am going to try and make Heather Ale this year.

I've found a simple recipe (heather, honey, malt extract, water, yeast) but was wandering if anyone has made Heather Ale.....?  And if so any tips......?

Many thanks,
Josey

Try and catch up with Oz Clarke & James May on a fairly recent prog they did for the Beeb - they went to Scotland and were shown how to make Heather Ale - apparently it was quite good (well according to them) ???

Well, i made about 15 bottles of Heather Ale following  a very basic recipe (eg it said yeast, but not how much!). It has turned out flat and looks a bit like cloudy apple juice, it has quite a pleasant taste, bizarrely a bit like scrumpy!  It isn't nearly as potent though thankfully.

I think I enjoyed the process more than the result, but that's half the fun hey!

I don't think my 'chuck-it-all-in-and-never-mind-the-quantities' approach to cooking is suited to homebrewing.   Heyho
