Help! Our spring sown red onions have started to throw up flowering stalks. Think this is probably a bad thing !! What should we do?

snap them off
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

OK, When we've done that should we leave them in the ground, or take them up and use them?

Depends.

If they are big enough to use, then do so...if not, try leaving them for a few weeks and see if they are still growing.

Give any others that haven't bolted a really good watering.

They tend to bolt due to stress such as a long hot dry spell.

Red ones are especially prone to this.

Next year make sure you only plant heat treated sets as this will stop it from happening.

They usually make full size onions, but won't keep as the base of the flower stem in the centre of the bulb will rot away once the onion is lifted. I let mine grow, but put them to one side to use first.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Or in situ, as one of mine just did in the rains.

just been to the lottie, no more flowers to report, seems to be just the 5 red onions.  Gave the rest of the onions a good watering, thanks for the advice.
