Rhubarb planting question
« on: October 13, 2016, 16:53 »
Hi,
I have been given 5 rhubarb crowns today. Should I plant them straight away? They are currently in bin liners. Would they be dormant now so not need to go in the grown ASAP?

Thanks
Steve

Best time I was always told for planting Crowns is to plant now until early Spring.
Dig hole and add plenty of manure.
Spread out the roots and make sure the tip of the crown is just above the soil.
Allow about a yard between each plant, as they spread that much when fully grown producing rhubarb.
Water them in, but sparingly, as they like the warm soil of autumn and early spring.
Be careful watering when young as they can get crown rot, if they get too damp, but don't let them ever dry out.
During a dry summer they welcome a good watering.
