Title: peas and mange tout
Post by: bright lights on March 13, 2008, 22:31
have started my peas and mangetout in pots so by the time they go out they will be a fair size i guess.Does this mean they will not need protecting from birds or are they at risk from birds at all stages of growth? Where it says support with canes and netting on the packet,i wasnt sure if that just meant from sparrows when seedlings. Also the mangetout get to 4 feet, can i grow them up a wigwam like my beans? thanks for any advice  :D

Support with canes and netting means that you need to grow them up the netting for support, rather than cover them with netting for protection.  I've not had trouble with birds in the summer (now is another matter entirely, but by May I think there's enough food that they don't bother with my veggies).

normally the flying rats will attack them when they are little shoots if the mice have'nt nicked your seed, once they to a certain size they are not that bothered as other vegetation is sprouting around.
