Identification help please! Blossom....
« on: May 03, 2013, 18:40 »
Hi All,

Just got an allotment and it has established trees already there so hopefully a harvest of something whatever we do!  Some are dwarf apples, but I'm not sure of the tree below - I'm hoping it's a plum, but not sure if it can be identified just from the blossom.

Any help or advice on identification gratefully received! :)

Jean

Added: Just googled, is it more likely to be Damson?

The flowers on the plum trees I have are a bit smaller than this, and they seem more like the cherries.

You'll know as soon as the leaves appear though as they are quite different

I thought I might have to wait until it has leaves but too impatient!  I think there is a cherry tree at the other side of the plot, it has a more upright / columnar growing habit.

Oh well, just have to be patient! Drums fingers......

I'd be very grateful if anyone has any ideas now there is a bit more leaf.  The leaves are quite small, I'd say a little smaller than an apple.

Hopefully this will help:

Thank you - that's exciting as there are 2 trees - just hope I can get to the fruit before the birds do!

Cherries almost always have horizontal, sometimes lens-shaped, markings on the trunk

Looks more like a plum or a damson to me

As savbo says, cherry bark is quite distinctive. Can you post a photo of the trunk?

Oooo interesting I have the very same question my tree looks exactly like yours, I was guessing cherry or plum. Can't wait to find out.
