When my daughter was born I had a female collie and she guarded the baby exceptionally well - even Dad had to have permission off me to go near the baby.  She was a beautiful dog and I still miss her.  Now have 2 males (1 Belgian Shepherd and 1 Heinz 57)  they do get on but there is a definate one-upmanship going on all the time.
