What did this to my sweetcorn :(
« on: September 17, 2011, 10:09 »

I went to the plot for the first time in a week and something has been enjoying our sweetcorn:

A fairly large number were like this, but only say 1/3 of the total - the biggest ones. I think (but am not sure) that I might have taken a peep at the innards of some cobs last week - if so they are likely the ones which then got savaged; there have also been a lot of earwigs on the plot in general and in the folds of the cobs.

There's not much i can do about it, but i was wondering what it was that had eaten them? Pigeons? I have a fence which i think keeps out the rabbits, but in general we have rabbits, pigeons, pheasants on the plot for sure, maybe some other things to boot.

Others have mentioned grey squirrels as the thieves in the past; I think it's probably beyond the capabilities of the average pigeon!

I've seen at least one grey squirrel in my garden this year, but so far it doesn't seem to have realised the possibilities of sweetcorn, although they certainly know how to deal with the sunflower seedheads left on the plants for the birds!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

On our plot the squirrels pinch the whole corn cob and run off with it, but it might still be squirrels.

My vote goes to squirrels.  They certainly like sunflowers too.  I looked out of the bedroom window to see a sunflower almost bent double with a squirrel hanging on the end trying to eat the seeds.  See the pic. Very persistent.

The same thing happened to mine a couple of years ago, and theres no badgers round my bit,so I put it down to rats or squirrels. but whatever did it waited till they were perfectly ripe and tasty  >:(
More bewilderingly, and I've never seen this before my peas got neatly nibbled out of their pods, even the ones four foot off the ground, some had been pulled off the plants and consumed under my bean teepees and other empty pods left on the plants. Wierd eh?
the same has started happening to the Broad beans.
Norm, my nieghbour at the plot, who seems to know everything reckons its shrews.
is pottering about a vocation?

My neighbour had some of theirs eaten like this last year and it was the local muntjac deer that were responsible, they put up a large fence around the rest and the next day found that they deer had jumped over the fence and trashed the rest.
