Is this a Thornless Blackberry?
« on: January 09, 2013, 07:43 »
Can anyone help please?
There is a small number (5-6) of very long 'canes / branches' of the plant below growing around the shed on my new half plot. It doesnt have thorns, the branches / canes are a very dark red in colour, is obviously a berry / fruit of some sort, but I dont know what.

Certainly looks like one.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Should I prune it at this time of year?
I would like to be able to train it a bit more than it is at the moment.

Take out completely anything that has already fruited --- these will have the remains of dead fruit visible towards their ends

Shorten anything that is too rampant, and think about how you could support the canes-- wires on the shed perhaps? an dthis keeps them under control.

It could be a blackberry, but also might be a thornless loganberry or tayberry.

My blackberries have green stems tbh but the tayberry etc have red stems..

either way you should have some thing good  :D

The 'berries' growing on my plot have deep red/purple shiny canes and a few thorns, so not thornless. We've decided to keep it for now (cutting all the others back) to see what kind of berry we get!

I'll cut back the fruiting canes now and wait until the fruits appear next year. Cant loose whatever it turns out to be.
