Rhubarb
« on: October 29, 2016, 10:24 »
Hi
I'm growing rhubarb for the first time. I've been in the RHS site and it says it will naturally wilt/due down in autumn but to take away leaves. Does it mean take wilted leaves away now or in spring
Thank you

Remove any leaves and stalks now, rhubarb benefits from frost getting to the buds through the winter.
At this time of year you can add some plot compost or manure, but don't cover the crown.

This is interesting - I have always let mine die back naturally as I thought the goodness in the leaves would get back to the plant either directly or as they rot down.  My rhubarb plants have always been triffid-like but I didn't know that about the frost! I am going to do some more reading, thanks mum

I agree with mumofstig. I compost the leaves, add manure and compost around the crown ensuring not to  cover them.

However there are people on my allotment, who completely cover the crowns significantly with manure and they have the best rhubarb year after year.

So I don't if it makes a lot of difference. Maybe I will cover half with manure and half without as an experiment.
