modifying my Handy 3.5hp rotovator
« on: May 09, 2016, 20:34 »
I have a handy 3.5hp rotovator, this weekend at a bootfair I spotted some small tractor type wheels, a set of 4 for £10.
I plan to mount these on some square tube that will slide on the axle instead of the tines. this will help get it from the car to the plot. at work today I was thinking and figured I could fabricate a harrow and maybe a plough that would fit in where the depth gauge fits, I will post pictures as I progress. this would mean I could use the harrow and plough to break up the soil prior to rotovating and hopefully avoid creating a pan at the rotovator depth

Is it ment to plough, have a look to what you can fit on there, otherwise you will just knock the guts  out of the engine
being just 3-5 hp

No, but it is a decent Briggs and Stratton engine, and similar in size to the Merry tillers that have a plough attachment, so I figure it should be able to handle a harrow and plough in looseish soil.
Its mostly so I can break up the soil a bit deeper prior to rotovating, and in the great British spirit of seeing if I can do it.
I dont intend to use it to break virgin ground by any means, if I wanted to do that I would hire a bigger rotovator

British engineering at its best. If it won't do it, make it do it.

well the 25mm square box has arrived and fits into the square hole in the wheel nicely. just got to check the fit on the 20mm shaft now (was quoted 2.5mm wall thickness- so it should fit. busy weekend ahead I think.

today was build the axle, the box was the right size, but had a web inside where the seam was welded, I got that out by reaming the hole with a 20mm drill.
after that it was cutting to length,  & drilling an 8mm cross hole for the pin through the axle.

next the cross holes were checked for fit on the rotovator axles, as well as the wheels to see what they would look like.

the tricky bit was next, making a fixing to hold the wheel from falling off on the end of the box section, this was achieved by welding 2 10mm nuts onto a piece of flat bar, cutting these off and welding the remaining plate + nut to the end of the tube.
(proffessional welders look away now), I used a gasless mig welder, not looking at what I was doing as I couldnt find the mask,
once the plates were attached all the excess was ground off back to the size of the tube, cooled and fitted to the wheels.
Now I just have to pop out to get a couple of large 10mm washers to go outside.

next job to build a harrow, only a 3 fluke one at first, but tomorrow I may try it at the plot with the backstop rod acting as an impromptu harrow to see if it has the grunt to do the job.

it has the grunt, I took it to the plot this morning and tested it, however it does need more weight, as the backstop can stop forward progress while the tyres just spin away digging holes. I will try it with the tyres reversed so the treat resists slipping.

Agricultural tractor tyres are designed to get the best grip by having the point of the vee pointing forwards as I think you have.
To add weight consider water in tyres, simple instructions on google or hang a weight on the front of the rotavator frame
