Bumble Bees lead a life similar to the Wasp but without the "attitude" problem :) In the spring time the single Queen Bumble Bee will come out of hibernation, like the Queen Wasp does, she then searches till she finds an old mouse hole or your old and dry compost heap, or under your shed.  She then builds her small "nest" and starts to lay her eggs.  She will lay from 20 to 150 eggs depending on food and her species.  When hatched, the "babies" will go about their business of gathering food for them all to eat, the avarage Bumble Bee nest only has about a teaspoon of Honey in ti though.  In the Autumn, as with Wasps, the workers all die and the Queen goes back into hibernation till Spring time.

This is a highly condensed write up about the bumble Bee.  If you want I will do a whole post on them!!!

It might have been easier to dig the compost into the allotment i.e dig a trench and cover over.
Also, have you put wire around the base of your bins to keep mice and other vermin out. They cause probs by eating yours and other people's crops. Remember to add dry goods as well to your bin and brassica stalks don't tend to compost unless cut up.
