the price of potatoes [eating]
« on: November 02, 2018, 17:59 »
do you buy your eating potatoes [25kg] bags although we have enough potatoes to last us to around the end of March I was at our local nursery the other day who sell eating potatoes in 25kg bags so 25kg would set you back £8.00 I was gob smacked £8.00 for a bag of spuds

the variety they where selling where sovereign a good size potato looked a nice clean potato I thought they where Cara as the looked a lot like Cara the lady that owns the nursery told me they where the cheapest eating potato they could get to retail and other varieties she said would cost more to buy in and she didn't think the punters would pay the extra that would cost around double the price of sovereign

if your buying your potatoes in 25kg bags what are you paying?  and what varieties are available to buy probably you buy your potatoes from the supermarkets in smaller amounts so totting up  how does 25kg that work out compared to my price

my friends tell me its not worth growing main crop potatoes on the allotments  but with my seven bags of cara sitting in the shed is it worth it

our local garage only sells in 12.5 kgs bags now £4.95 variety not showed only red or whites.
my potatoes usually last till Christmas. i wish they would finish earlier as they are very scabby and boil to a mush. but at those sort of prices I ain't so sure.

I saw 12.5kg bags for sale last week at  a local garden centre at £7. Today I paid £7.50 for 12.5kg at the farm shop I buy my meat from(too far to go back to the nursery). They’re Marfona, there were 25kg bags for £14 but I couldn’t bring myself to pay that 😱.  I still have some of mine left but they are so tiny & hubby won’t eat them with the skins on😡. I told him when we got back I think we’ll have to eat more rice & pasta this winter

Local to us they are £4.99 per 12k bag, or £9.99 for 25k.

Does anyone remember the last time potatoes were in short supply and the price of chips from the chippies went up accordingly, but never came down again?

I recall back in the 1980, when i was fruit and veg buyer, tatties became like gold dust around the Easter time. We even had to import Dutch binji to meet demand. I remember making chips from parsnips and Swedes. Luckily the first earlies were well advanced that spring so the gap was not to severe.

We may not be able to buy many in next Spring - so it's probably worth getting a sack of late keepers in before they get too expensive.

No wonder that the farming industry has one of the highest rates of suicide with prices that low!

Morrison sell 12.5 for £5, but these are earlies so storing is limited. Main crop for 2kg is about 6.50 and a bag of onions 5. Most main crop go to Walkers
