Growing Carrots
« on: May 18, 2011, 09:48 »
Hi All,

I have sowed carrots in small troughs.
The troughs are about 12 inches apart i would say.

As you all know (much better than me) the seed were really really small.
So coming through now are lines of seedlings.

They are only very small at the minute but i need to know what to do next.
If i leave them all in the gound, i guess it will be pretty congested and stunt growth ??

What is the next step and when should it be done.

Thanks,
Webby.

They will push each other apart to a certain extent, so you can leave them like that and pick thinnings to use, which in turn leaves bigger gaps for the remaining carrots to grow into....

Sympathies Webby I know what you mean. If you like baby carrots leave them as they are, keep them well watered and some will grow big, pull these when big enough and as Argyllie says the rest will hopefully expand into the space left. You could thin them now to a finger width apart to get bigger roots.

It may be not much help now, but consider using pelleted seed next time, the pellets are brightly coloured and although still quite small, very easy to space. Do not be put off by doubts about germination of pelleted seed, this is the first time I have got parsnips to germinate outdoors successfully.

I am trying this method this year and have attached a piccy, parsnips in the forefront carrots at the back, I estimate 97% germination.

Thank you Moles Seeds. :)

I sucsetionally grow carrots in flower buckets now due to poor germination rates and even poorer stoney soil  :(
