No damsons
« on: October 03, 2012, 18:54 »
I have around 40 damsons trees in my garden. Normally at this time of year the branches are thick with fruit. This year we haven't had a single damson. A lot of leaves are riddled with holes. Could a pest be responsible, or is it all down to the washout summer here in southern Scotland? Also, the trees are probably at least 30 years old, so could that have something to do with it?
Still, go to look on the bright side. To me the lack of damsons is irritating - but 100 years ago when my land was part of a fruit farm it would have been utterly devastating.

I think it is because of the rubbish weather this year. We have only had a handful of damsons and plums this year. :(

I think the holes might be caused by a fungal disease like shot hole or by a pest, but the lack of crop is I think like Mrs Ball says - the weather.  At the allotment  the plums and damsons were all in blossom when we had hard frosts and they killed it all off. There are very few trees with any fruit at the allotments I am on (and it is a very big site with lots of plum trees). Perhaps we will have a bumper year next year to make up for it! :)

I do hope so. It goes against the grain to buy them even tho' they are fairly cheap at Spitalfields.  :(

The same goes for the sloe bushes round here.  :(

Not one berry on the 'bush' that I know on my farmer friends' land. It's near enough a third of a mile long, along a dyke back, and for the whole length ther ain't one berry!

But he says the same thing, they're all hanging back this year, so next year will (hopefully) be a bumper crop.

Many people have had poor fruit crops this year.

If you think about it, many blossoms were out early because of a warm snap we had, and it's possible that the usual pollinators weren't out and about that early.  Then, there was that really cold snap.  And also it's been so wet that even if pollinators were alive at the right time, it was too wet for them to fly.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Oh well, at least it's good to know that it's probably not the fault of my poor old trees. Hopfully they've still got a few more good years left in them - weather permitting.

Same here with apples, just a handful of manky ones. Thankfully soft fruit like gooseberries and rasps did well.

I took a walk down't lane to collect brambles and I collected about 10lbs in a couple of hours.  They were hanging off the bushes like grapes and all ripe at the same time which is unusual.

Cheers,   Tony.

There were no plums on out trees this year and I noticed lots of holes in the leaves, found a few bugs and identified them as Japanese beetles >:(  Had to pick each one off and drop it in a bucket of soapy water as there is no pesticide for them.
