From what's been said in the past, your best bet is to secure your hens in a fox-proof run preferably with leccy fencing and scare the fox. that way it will keep other foxes away, but will be too wary to approach the hens.

That's the theory anyway.

Foxy posted this the other day.....

Of course it legal to kill it, as long as you use legal methods to do so. Why the silly questions ?

Legal methods? Shooting? Poisoning? (Can't say I have much experience with either) Also, what is the legal way of disposing of the carcass?

Poison is not a legal method. You are allowed to shoot, snare or trap.
Wild animal carcasses fall under the remit of your local refuse department. I checked up on it a few weeks ago with regard to another matter.

this post is worrying me...............

are you confident that you can kill it quickly and humanely?, cos if you have any doubts, and you cause it to suffer before it dies, not only will that be a criminal offence but surely your conscience will not allow it?

and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE dont snare it, this is so inhumane!

Herein lie the problem, I think. Foxes are definately becoming a problem even in the relatively urban area I live in and nobody seems to have a clear idea of what to do.
BTW shotguns are also out for me as I don't think the neighbours or local constabulary would approve. My neighbour talks of using his air rifle but I don't think that will be a clean kill if at all?

You can't poison, Snares cruel and guns likely to get you in hot water with the police. Think adequate protection for your girls is the only way to go then.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

shoot it, a .22 will do it nice and quickly.

if you see a fox sniffing around you can always ask local farmers if they know anyone with a firearms licence. most people will happily come and kill the b*gger

and fox fur makes lovely ear muffs for the winter
