Painting a picture on a shed
« on: November 09, 2009, 12:37 »
have just put my mums old shed up on our plot and i told my six year old he could paint some flowers on it but he has decided he would like to paint a rainbow on it.

do you think it would be ok to do it with poster paint then put varnish over it to weatherproof it? i will put timber care underneath it first

Hi Lucywil,

Nice idea!  :) As long as everything is water based, you should be OK. I'm assuming your poster paints are water based. You are likely to get a reaction and cracking/peeling if you mix water/solvents/oils....

i am guessing that varnish isn't water based?

Make sure you are allowed to make your shed pretty.
My site has rules about them being painted green or brown only. :(
I got a few suggestions off here about painting it in a green and brown pattern, but in the end I just went for brown!

At the moment it is only tarted up with a sequinned star which someone gave me stuck on the door.
I plan on growing sweet peas up the side of it next year to make it colourful.  :D

I would use acrylics, you could either pick up a cheap set of colours or mix PVA glue in with some poster paints for a similar effect. I think you'd get a brighter/neater look than poster paint would give on rough would. You can then varnish over and it should keep well.

so here it is, took us a little while to get round to it, we used poster paint mixed with pva glue in the end with a coat of varnich over the top, the rest is not quite finished.
