Hello, I know this may sound daft but can anyone please clarify a question.
Last year I planted shallot sets, I got a very good return. So this year if I plant a bulb from last year, will this  form into bunches or a single bulb. As I  understand if I grow from seed I will only get single bulb. (is last years bulb a set)

If you planted a bulb aka a set (a small shallot) and it grew into a clump of shallots, then in you plant one of those (a set) it will grow into another clump of shallots. True shallots reproduce by bulb multiplication.

What has muddied the waters lately, is seed suppliers calling banana onions 'shallots' and selling their seeds as such. However onions don't reproduce in the same way as shallots, one of these seeds, when grown wouldn't multiply but just grow a single 'banana' shaped onion.
