Monro tiller. Villiers mk12 coil backplate removal
« on: September 23, 2021, 15:17 »
Hi I am renovating a Monro tiller with a Villiers mk12 engine fitted. I am going to have to fit a new coil but I'm having problems removing the back plate. I removed the four nuts that seem to be holding the plate on and tried tapping the plate off but it seems stuck fast. Is there anything else I should be doing?  See photos attached

Donkeys years since I worked on a Villiers but that one has been stripped fairly recently so I wouldn't expect the backplate to be stuck. It may be that there is another nut behind the mag coil, not entirely sure why you don't just undo the screws holding the coil on anyway, rather than removing the backplate. By the way, the HT lead is not attached to the coil, it ends in a contact that touches a brass thing on the coil. Be very sure it isn't just the points needing cleaning and gaping correctly, before changing the coil. 9 times out of 10 it is points, when the engine won't spark.

Hi , I have checked the points and all looks fine. I need to remove the plate because the coil is screwed on with the heads on the back of the plate. I can't see anything behind the coil. Am I right in thinking the plate should just pull off once I have removed the four retaining nuts?
