Hi my friend has told me to try growing strawberries in a  pipe, this is what i was going to do, cut a 5" pipe around 4" long, block up one end and drill in some drain holes, then drill in 4/5 holes about 30mm then fill with compost and plant my plants in the holes when its all done hang it off a hanging basket hanger then water, my question is, is this a good way off growing the fruit, or any better way, I was think off poss 3/4 of these hanging on my fence.

I think I remember someone saying there was an issue with watering the plants at the bottom of the pipe.

I've been toying with the idea here as Im pushed for space - but with the addition of a smaller diameter pipe with lots of holes drilled in running down the middle (32mm waste pipe) inside a 110mm soil pipe.  Water then goes into the inner pipe the full length of planter.

Hi Paul,

Why don't you try planting outside the pipe?

Tie a plastic bag to the pipe, put Hydroleca in the bottom fill with compost and plant through the bag. Drill some drain holes in the pipe at the Hydroleca level to avoid mould /saturation.

Eight plants in the space needed by one.

when you put the holes in for the plants you could squeeze a small watering tube out the plant holes to directly water into lower areas

If there is a problem with water getting down to lower sections then perhaps you could have a watering point part way down?
