Courgette problems
« on: April 09, 2010, 01:13 »
My green bush courgette was growing fine in its initial position/small pot but recently when it was about 2 inch high and seemed to be growing fine I potted it onto a 6 inch pot but now it seems as though its starting to die( Leaves going brown and starting to shrivel up. Do courgettes not like been moved on.
Its on the windowsill in our kitchen and has been kept moist. Any reasons as to why this may be or anything that might help it.

Thanks John.

Courgettes are like cucumbers and melons which really don't like any root disturbance. If you simply popped out the smaller pot's contents into a larger pot and filled with more soil/mix, then that would be fine. If you wiggled out the plant to move it, then it's a downhill battle for you.
It also sounds as if you might be watering too much and the roots are simply rotting. And, it's also a bit early to start courgettes. They're a fast growing plant which really needs warmth and sun. I won't start mine until beginning of May.

like Trillium says it's a little early for courgettes but thats good because it means you have plenty of time to sow another one

I start mine in a 6in pot to avoid having to disturb the roots before planting in the final position. Mine are just germinating now (planted a week ago) in the greenhouse but they won't be going outside til mid May, and only then if it's warm enough.
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

Apart from leeks, I use paper pots to start everything.

But I use various sizes of aerosol cans depending on the seed. For courgette (sowed yesterday) I have a very fat spray paint can which makes short but fat pots. The whole thing will then go in the ground in May.
