Raspberries (follow on).
« on: October 02, 2022, 16:31 »
Good afternoon everybody,
after hacking back the overgrown raspberry patch, applied well rotted  'hoss muck and straw', I see new shoots are showing.  Do I (A) leave well alone or (B) trim them back to ground level and if (B) can I use these shoots as cuttings?

Cheers,   Tony.

I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Summer fruiting or autumn fruiting, or unknown?

Personally I'd leave them as they won't produce much more growth this year, then let them grow next year to see when they fruit.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Good morning mumofstig,
I've no idea which but I tend towards the Summer fruiting variety.

Cheers,  Tony.

If they are summer-fruiting then you may not get much of a crop next year, unless they make shoots PDQ  before the winter stops all growth.
Autumn-fruiting are usually cut right to the ground in winter, but as you are not sure, you'll just have to leave them to get on with it
Like GG says, make a note of when they flower, so you'll know for future pruning...

If you want some more, you'll have to dig a few plants up and split them apart, so each stem has a piece of root for replanting.
