After years of trying I just use a HB pencil, plus cleaning off is so much easier. For plants in the garden I use a brother labeller a bit like the old dynamo ones but this is electronic. Lldll have them every now & then about £20.
A woman's place is in her garden.

I just use the white plastic labels and use an HB  pencil on them.
That stays on clearly for the whole growing season in the greenhouse, indoors and outside growing conditions.
I bought the last batch from the pound shop four years ago and I have cleaned them each season.
Cleaned them all again last month for next year. Just a quick light scourer scrub in cold water does it for me.
Only about a dozen or so of the hundred or so I bought then have gone brittle. So not as I have added much plastic to the world.

Been doing that for many years too and in the past found it was about three years that most became brittle, but this last batch seems to be holding out a lot better.

I find edding pens much better than sharpies for non porous material. For wood you need a paint based pen or pencil

lolly sticks to write on now. However I don't need them to last all season, only until I put them in the ground so I don't mix up seedlings. If I have different varieties next to each other I'll take a picture at planting time so I can refer to it if I jeed to know in the future which variety is where.

I've also reused the plastic ones until they become unusable

Yes to both, I tend to face the writing towards the plant out in the garden to protect it from the sun.

I use black chinagraph pencils because I remember using them when I started work to write on glassware such as test tubes and they only came off when washing in hot water.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Sharpies work fine but you have to make sure you get the oil based ones not the normal ones  ;)
I normally get them from Amazon but failing that paint markers last almost a year as well
