Garlics up (and looking good)
« on: January 06, 2022, 12:39 »
Good morning everyone,
the garlic is growing well, 6-7" (inches),  do I need to protect it or leave it to the ravages of a wild, windy and wet Wiltshire winter!

The plants look remarkably even highted (highted)?  how about tall!

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I tend to just leave mine uncovered and let them get on with it, doesn't seem to do them any harm.

Mine are under a cloche lest the **** rabbits decide to eat them before they are mature. Left them uncovered last year and had a very poor crop as a result of the rabbit attack. Unfortunately we are inundated at our allotment due to rabbits being driven off the local building sites and onto our plots!!
Keep digging

I have never put a cloche on mine, but they are inside a fenced area on the plot,  as I had some munching pests last year - muntjac deer rather than rabbits.

There is a risk of newly planted cloves rotting in very wet soil.  The winter weather does not seem to bother them once they have got going.

Just to clarify I have previously had good crops from unprotected garlic.
It’s just we have a major rabbit problem due to excessive building in our village driving them onto the allotments. Can’t really blame the wildlife if we build on their habitats.

Never cover mine and it usually does very well.  Only problem I ever get is if the ground gets flooded, I occasionally lose one or two in our heavy clay soil, but covering them wouldn't help.
Cold and wind not a problem.
