Early garlic harvest?
« on: June 07, 2016, 21:13 »
Seems early, but the garlic is starting to keel over, perhaps encouraged by the hot & dry weather we've had here. Dug up a few tonight and it seems to have bulbed up reasonably. Anyone else experiencing the same?

Mine hasn't started yellowing yet, but from the size of the necks it look pretty much ready. May try digging one up tomorrow to have a look. Are those bulbs fully cloved? They look very rounded.

Can see the cloves, and the bulbs aren't too bad a size overall by comparison with some I've grown in the past; with more moisture they may have developed further, but we've had no rain for weeks now. The stems have definitely shrunk and gone soft above the bulb, and the foliage was flat on the ground and pretty shot, so I can't see they would have developed much further.

we had a fairly mild winter so the garlic has been more or less growing throughout - I remember a few years ago I had a similar experience and I was lifting some of the early varieties in mid-May   If I recall, we had an exceptionally dry spring and when the plants started to die off, I thought I'd lost the crop only to find the bulbs were fully developed and mature.

I dug this one up today and looks nearly ready, but I'll leave the rest to die off before gap harvesting unless there is a long rainy spell.
