OK I have now decided on which varieties I am going to grow but while doing a bit of research come across someone saying that the seeds of squash should be sown direct and never transplanted! I have always sown onto a pot then transplanted... what is the most common way for people on here to grow their squash ? I don't have a problem with direct sowing but sometimes the spring down here can be very wet and the soil unsuitable for sowing that is why I normally transplant .

I start each one in it's own pot, they do transplant easily - don't know why anyone would say they don't.. What they don't like is getting pot bound - so make sure they're potted on if the weather prevents them being planted in time.

I've always transplanted from pots as well and often move them up from a small pot they have germinated in to a larger one to grow on.  I've never had any problems with this method at all.

In a late spring I've held onto plants in pots until they get to the 2/3L pot size.  They do grow faster in open soil, but as you say, if it is very wet and the soil is cold and muddy, they would be far better off out of it than in it
