sweetcorn cross pollination
« on: January 13, 2008, 22:28 »
Going to try two types this year after my mild success last year
I am going to put "F1 Early extra sweet" in a bed about 6 weeks before "Royalty"
How far apart should I put them?
Or will the 6 weeks stop them cross pollinating?
You can take a horse to water....but a pencil must be lead!!
(No chemicals ......yet!)

I found this for you Gaffer

Early sweet corn plantings tend to be less uniform in plant growth, and ear quality may be lower due to incomplete pollination. To prevent cross-pollination by unwanted varieties (field corn with sweet corn, standard sweet corn with super sweet corn, and yellow with white sweet corn), varieties should be separated by at least 250 ft or more. Cross-pollination also can be prevented by planting varieties with different maturity ratings (early, mid- and late season) at the same time or by planting varieties with the same maturity rating in successive plantings 14 days apart.

so check on maturng rates to make sure the second planted one doesn't catch up with the first.

Yep, you'll have to go for time rather than distance. But having said that I'm sure other plot holders grow sweetcorn (they do on my site), and I don't think there is generally a problem.

What 6 weeks are you talking about? that's the entire summer, if at all.

250ft apart?!  Surely that is physically not possible on an allotment site!

Heh paintedlady,
The reason Quotes / smilies / etc come out a mess in your posts is that you have "Disabled BBCode in this post" (I edited the above to re-enable).  This is probably defaulting from your Profile settings.

 thanks WG.  As I use the computer at work, I was just being cautious of what I had ON as I didn't know what it meant and I don't want the IT police on my case!!!!!

Anyone know which company puts most seeds in their packets?  I only got around 20 seeds in the packet last year, it wasn't enough - I'll definitely save them this year when I know the ins and outs.
