Blanching leeks
« on: August 19, 2008, 12:53 »
Hi folks. We planted our leeks out months ago but did not trench them and they are a good size now except the white part is only about half an inch long. We have plenty of newspaper which we can wrap around them, we also have some plastic tube we can place over them, or should I dig a trench and replant them? Would any of these methods give better results, or would any of them be quicker?  Next year we will just trench them at the begining.

:)

it's a good idea to dib a deep hole when you plant them.  I use an old walking stick, and I grow them on longer than some peeps so they're bigger when they get planted.  You can earth them up with sieved soil or compost so you get white bits, or put some plastic piping over them as you say. I wouldn't dig them up
