My autumn onions have arrived. Are they ok?
« on: October 11, 2012, 19:53 »
Ive just received my autumn onion sets from Marshall's. 100 x radar and 100 x red cross, as well as some garlic (Provence wight and bella Italiano).

They all look and smell great but many of the white onion sets don't appear to have any skin on them...is this normal?

Can they be planted when they don't have skins on or should I just chuck them on the compost?

Cheers
Jim

Some types don't have much of a papery outside skin.   Not sure if this is just due to the processing, but they seem to grow fine.  As long as they are not squishy and have no signs of mould, they should be good to go  :)

Thanks, New Shoot. They'll be going in the ground this weekend when I've finished raising the beds

That's a lot of onions for over winter.

Be aware that they are not good storers and are really a short term stop-gap until the spring planted ones are ready.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Yeah, DD. I bought 100 of each by mistake. I thought they were packets of 50

I won't plant them all, and have a large family that will be grateful for some  :D

If you have room, plant them all and start eating them early as giant spring onions  :)  I like them so much this way, few of mine make it to full size

I would plant them all if you have the space, I haven't had my delivery yet from marshalls but I went in for the 100 of each.  I had 100 of each back in the spring, by the time a few are too small, the ones that just rot, the ones the birds get, the ones you accidentally tread on! Plant the lot there will be casualties!
