Many thanks for all advice re bean germination. I now remember growing beans at school in jam jars on damp paper in the dark. However I was lucky enough to buy twelve runner bean plants for a quid which has sort of made up for my failures! Will use methods suggested for other beans though, cheers!

They're deep, but you have to make drainage holes.

I've just caught up with this thread. My beans didn't sprout after weeks so in desperation, I went and bought a few plants. Bu**er me if the seeds then all sprouted! So now I have 2 bean frames.  :roll:
