planting with herbs
« on: May 27, 2009, 10:02 »
we planted up a herb garden at weekend but find we have a bit too much space in between plants. Is there anything suitable that we can plant in between that might grow happily with the herbs?

thankies
R.I.P Bobby Smiler Smith......love you always little fella.

Seed sown herbs like coriander maybe?

Or pot marigold (Calebdula) as you can eat the flower petals in salad, perhaps

fenugreek - just a little patch
parsley - takes a while to germinate though
dill - but not near the fennel

had fennel seeds from sunshine but didnt have any luck germinating them.

I was thinking along the lines of something small like little gem lettuce or radish but i imagine they need different conditions i.e. herbs needing drier conditions and the others neeeding more water (mind you everythings getting a drench again today)

I am still planting up a new area of my garden and it is called a "Herb and saladarium" (Don't worry I make up words), so far it has in addition to herbs Nasturtiums, Pot Marigold, A few spare Onion sets, garlic and shallots, Rocket, three types of Lettuce that didn't have room to go in the main beds.

Salads are the best bet as they will grow quickly.  Your herbs will grow to fill the gaps so you will probably find that next year there will be fewer or no gaps at all.

I recommend Sorrel (it’s kind of a herb anyway) it looks a bit like baby beetroot leaves and rocket is always a winner.  Both are reasonably quick growing.

Look out for slugs. They make a habit of destroying herb patches and the love basil and coriander and most salad crops.  I've put down some membrane and covered the whole area with gravel.   (it's very inexpensive from B&Q) and it seems to work.  It saves a bunch of weeding and you can just move the gravel and cut a hole in the membrane to plant new herbs and replace old ones.
