Viola cuttings
« on: June 22, 2010, 22:21 »
I've been enjoying my "winter-flowering" pansies (bought as a tray of small plugs, v. cheaply from the Range) since March and dead-heading religiously has given me a wonderful show.
Although still producing loads of flowers, the plants are getting leggy.
Should I cut them back and hope for new blooms?
Do I need to take cuttings from any new growth if I want them next year or will they be hardy enough to over-winter? I'd like to keep them in the same pots/hanging baskets.....

Cut them back fairly hard and move the pots into a cooler partially shaded position.  They will come back and flower again, but pansies tend to flower themselves to destruction in the end. I think it would be easier to buy more plugs in the autumn than try and hang on to them forever.
