Storing seed potatoes
« on: January 20, 2021, 20:10 »
My seed potatoes arrived today, Charlotte, Russet Burbank and Nicola.  What is the best way of storing them until the conditions are suitable for planting?  I have looked, but can’t see an answer.

the site's info on potato growing is here

When you get your seed potatoes you put them in a cool but frost free place where they get some light but not direct sunlight. The potatoes will then grow short stubby shoots to get them off to a fast start when planted out.

One good option if you don't want to start chatting them yet is old egg boxes which you then close the lid on. Works really well for me.

If you do keep your seed potatoes in the dark, they still do need to be kept cool or you will end up with long  sprouts on them which brake off when you try to plant them!
This post is 100% biodegradable and can be composted after use.

Yes they need to be kept cool in the egg boxes. Sorry I should have mentioned that.

I put them in egg boxes labelled with the name of the potato variety. I put these in my cellar which is cold and frost free but I dont close the lids. With lids open they stay colder and if they do decide to chit there is light so you dont end up with those long white brittle chits but healthy green ones.
