Cheap fencing
« on: May 14, 2011, 20:16 »
Hi Folks, Very new member, at last I've just got an allotment after 2 years on the waiting list. I've also just been made redundant last month so money is tight at the moment . I still want to start my allotment project though, my first priority is to fence it in. (It used to be a double allotment) Can anyone please advise where I can source cheap fencing. Particularly fenceposts. Is it possible to get them from reclaimed sites etc.  Would be very grateful for any advice - Fogginlad

Why do you need to fence it in as it can cause problems with drainage, wind and shade?

Run a post every 6ft apart with some wire and grow blackberry/fruit canes of all kinds along it and you will end up with a nice fedge (Fence/hedge).  If you have a country park close by with woodland phone then and ask for a few wooden post and explain what they are for they might be able to help.
Thanks

The usual and cheapest way to mark the boundary is to run two string  lines the width of a path and let nature fill it in for you.

weed it out and let the grass grow you will not have to walk on the planting area then.

creosote??

I'm sure Paul means creocote as creosote and creosote substitute are no longer available for use by the general public.

When we divide plots on our site, we simply put one post in on the boundary line, and that tends to do the trick.

Sometimes the first person onto the plot plants right up to the line, which is a bit of a bind, but normally no extra barrier is required.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I like the idea of stringing wire between some posts 4 or 5 foot apart and planting berries along them!  Or maybe even pumpkins.....ideas!

the problem with my allotments is you get a lot of dogs on it - which really should be there

I keep finding faeces there - someone reckons they where from a fox but im not too sure
