Something wrong with my chuck - HELP Please
« on: February 01, 2009, 15:29 »
One of my warrens has a bare bottom and when I had a closer look at her, I noticed some whitish colouring on her red bits on the side of her head (I know there's a proper name for them, but don't know what it is). All of the other chucks are fine.
Does anyone know what this may be? I'd appreciate any help

Hi Crazymayo

I'm unsure about the wattles? Sorry :(

Is your hen showing any other signs of being ill?
Is she eating and drinking normally?
Standing around rather than usual hen stuff scratching about etc...
Do her poops look normal (link here to some poo pics which may help http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=17568.0 )

Has she laid recently?
Could she be moulting are there any feathers lying around?

Sarah :)

In addition to Vembers post -could you describe the whitish marks? Do they look wartlike or "cheesy" looking? any small redish spots? Just checking not a virus -of course could be nothing at all! :tongue2:

No other signs of being ill, seems quite happy and normal poos. I have taken a photo, if I can work out how to upload it, I'll put it on. I think she must be still laying as I have 6 and they are still averaging 5 a day (I'm amazed as I thought they stopped laying over winter) I've only had them since last August, no problems till now.
Thanks for replying

Hope this works, this is the top end  :)  I'm working on getting the pic of the bottom end small enough to upload.

Hi CrazyM

Her botty sure looks sore :(
Have you checked her all over for creepy crawlies?

Where does she sleep at night? On a perch or in the nest box??
Is she pecking at it at all? Or are your other birds pecking at her?

I think I'd be tempted to pop some germolene on it :)

Sarah :)

Hi,
I had a look and can't see any creepy crawleys. Would they be visable on the skin or would I need to look in between her feathers?
She normally sleeps on the perch but has recently taken to perching on the divider between the nesting boxs and pooping in them, the little madam  :tongue2:
I've not seen her pecking at herself or any of the others pecking her.
I think it looks like new quills coming through, but not having much chicken experience, I cant be sure.
Do you think the whitish colour on her wattles is anything to worry about?
Sally  :)

The feather loss might be simply part of the moulting process, but I'd research the symptoms of mites a bit. It doesn't seem to be from diarrhoea.

The colour of the ear lobes is not important unless you are 'showing' her. Apparently, hens that lay light coloured eggs have white lobes, and those that lay brown eggs, have red lobes. What colour lobes a layer of green eggs would have I have no idea though.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
