dead carrot!
« on: May 14, 2009, 20:48 »
Just went to check on things... how odd - I found one carrot with the leaves just lying flat on the ground and rather dead looking. I took it out of the ground. The rest seemed fine, all roughly around 4-6" tall.

What do you think caused this.

ps. they are netted so should be bird free!

Might it have been lack of water?  I have mine in a pot and they were very wilted the other day and looked beyond saving, but perked up once watered.

Not sure this is the case: (1) the rest were fine (2) it's been raining for a day or two (3) the ground is nice and moist to a good depth (4) in the dry spell i watered

I'll assume a one-off suicide case then  ;)

I had the same type of thing with a lettuce the other day. One carped it, all others fine.
I put it down to slug attack, or some other pest.
Keep an eye on the others, hopefully it was just a one off pest attack.

Probably something has eaten the taproot. Slug, leatherjacket, wireworm, cutworm, must be main suspects. Watch the plants either side of the dead one. If they start to wilt the culprit has moved along. Dig until you find it.
