Allotment newbie in Leicestershire
« on: January 11, 2020, 21:07 »
Hello, I thought Iíd introduce myself before plaguing you all with questions.

Iím widowed with a 9 year old daughter, and Iím just getting grips with an allotment in my local village site, and although Iím an old hand at big gardens, Iím completely new at allotments. Weíve just moved into a newish housing estate, with about four square feet of garden, So I thought weíd give allotment a shot.

The allotment is up by the school bus stop, so itís nicely convenient for me. Itís 8x22m, so a fairly typical size and shape, and not too weedy (no bindweed at least) and Iím really looking forward to getting to grips with it.

Iíve got lots of questions about how to get set up. There are so many issues you donít really have to think about in a garden. Water, security, power, getting tools up there etc etc. So Iím hoping there will be some brains available to pick.

Hello and welcome.

If there's no water butts check and see if there's a stand pipe your allowed to use. If not, get some water butts set us asap before summer to give them a chance to fill. Our plot has no tap and one butt that was 100L. We lost everything in 2018 in the drought as we couldn't get enough water up there.

Hi there, Iím in Leicestershire too, Iíve answered on your other post about paths & Ibc tanks. Take a look at the gardeners diaries on here, good way of keeping a record of what youíve been up to & a comments thread linked gives us the chance to comment, plus if you put the link in your signature line itís even easier

Welcome to the site and congrats on your new lotty.

Just remember that you'll get 10 pieces of advice from only 6 gardeners, and you can't go wrong!  ;)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
