Old wheelbarrow
« on: February 07, 2014, 22:24 »
I have an old wheelbarrow that I will be planting up and I wondered if it would be deep enough for carrots or parsnips? I have stony sill so sm trying to think of ways round it

Some stump rooted carrots will be fine, but parsnips I'm not so sure you have the depth they would need. Obviously they will grow, but chances are they will fork badly.

mine dried out quite badly because of the shape of it so you might want to add some of those water retaining gel crystals.

Thanks for the tips! Will look into possible carrot varieties then. I do have some water retaining gels but will look carefully at harvesting times to see if I can avoid my 3 week honeymoon period (from 20th July) -my challenge for the year!

Try those little carrots which grow round, and finish up about the size and shape of a bantam's egg!

They're very quick to mature too, so you may get two crops in a year!

"Parmex".
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The depth of a good old wheelbarrow should allow you to grow most of the stump rooted varieties.
Although seen as an exhibition variety, sweet candle is about the sweetest tasting and uniformly brilliant carrots there are.

Ha, they have http://www.heritageharvestseed.com/parsnip.html this might persuade me to grow parsnips, I wonder what shape the cores are?

That's interesting. Might look to see if I can track down a UK supplier and experiment!

You mean these?

Guernsey stump rooted parsnips

I'm trying these too, since I've got a container spare.
