Bark clippings for allotment paths
« on: July 09, 2013, 12:19 »
Morning all. Hope it's hot enough for you!
Right, just wondering about bark chippings for my lottie paths, does anyone have any pros or cons?
Also is it best to just ring local tree surgeons to get them? What sort of price do they ask?
Or.....if anyone is in the north east of England....do you have a number I can call.
Ta ta for now

Mine were 60 a load and it took a load per plot, however now nearly five years on we do need another load to top up. We got ours from a local tree man. I find weeds do grow in ours but the deeper you make it the better, weeds just pluck out so not a hard job

Have you asked your local council? Leeds City Council will deliver a 4-tonne van's worth for £30.

I haven't asked anyone yet but the council and local tree dudes will be top of the list, planning on putting a few layers of grond clear plastic underneath to help with the weeding....I work seven days a week so plot time is a bit thin at the moment

I have done two allotments with chippings as paths and they are really good, i think you would have to replenish the paths once a year for the first couple of years to get it nice and compact. i also put down some good quality thick weed membrane, this is a must.

I've used bark chippings with a weed suppressant membrane underneath. However, couch grass seems to root into the chippings. Any suggestions how to deal with it?

Look around in skips and builder merchants, for used tonne builders bags ideal width for paths as free membrane. Also watch when you are laying it i now wear a dustmask as itgave me a bad chest for a couple of days.
