Broccoli blown
« on: June 03, 2015, 20:48 »
Hi guys,

I've never grown broccoli before, and wasn't expecting a crop for a few months yet, but the middle has blown, so I harvested it. It was planted about 6 weeks ago under debris netting.

Is the plant done now, or will more heads come?

It was well watered.

When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

If you keep it well fed and watered, there should be smaller heads grow from the leaf axils, in the same way that PSB behaves

So, it is quite difficult to get the perfect large head you see in the supermarkets?

Crumbs - that was an early crop! If you cut the head off it will grow side-shoots you can harvest for quite a while. I grow summer broccoli and caulis and plant it in a partly-shaded area because I find that they doesn't blow as quickly. Planting very firmly also helps with this.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Thanks, they were heeled in very nicely, and have survived some strong winds.... could the green debris netting have anything to do with it?
