What Bedding Do You Use?
« on: September 18, 2012, 16:00 »
Hiya all

What bedding do you use in your houses and nest boxes?

I have been using straw and chopped straw successfully, but am coming to the end of my supply, and wondering whether to try something else?

Thanks a lot, as always

I use miscanthus which is great stuff and cheap to boot. I also shred all our waste paper and use that in the nest boxes.

Easibed. The horse one is cheaper than the chicken one. :)

I use Aubiose and really like it.... it kind of soaks up any moisture in the pooh so everything keeps quite dry as it were!

Bales are around £8, but go quite a long way!

Does anyone use wood shavings? When I bought my newest girl a week or so ago, she was in a pen full of wood shavings, and I was thinking it would be easier to scoop the poop every other day or so than it is at the moment, when I basically leave it, then once a week (or so depending!) I empty the whole thing out, as its tricky to get the poo without a shovel full of straw, which inevitably I seem to then drop!!!

Floor of house is wood shavings and the nest box has newspaper sheets with straw on top. Mine do not sleep in there, put flower planters in at night, so they do not poo in there.

I use D/E shavings but no straw. It is quite absorbant
I poop pick daily so it doesnt get too messy in there and it all goes on the compost heap.

I cant get Aubiose or miscanthus without travelling whereas i can get shavings local and cheap. I really want to get hold of some to try in our bird house where the quails are as the shavings are not working too well in there.

If you decide to get shavings, make sure you get it dust extracted.

I use wood chips in the run and main part of the coop, then straw in the nestbox.

I poop pick each day which keeps everything relatively pong free

Lavender scented shavings, dust extracted, about £9 a bale but lasts ages.  Always smells nice.  Dries up the poop nicely.  Every third day I poop pick then every 7-10 days do a total change of bedding and clean it all out (only have two chooks).  Never have an ammonia smell at all. Use woodchip in the run.  Use stalosan f when changing the bedding underneath the shavings and once a week sprinkle on the woodchips.  I also put lino on the coop floor and partway up the walls and cleaning is a doddle.   :)

Also put shavings in their nestbox, but they prefer to lay on the floor at the moment.

I have been using Bedwell for hens, turkey poults and quail.
