Do chickens yawn?
« on: July 17, 2009, 17:00 »
Hello everyone.

I was watching my girls today as they perched in the middle of the day for a little preen and siesta( sad, I know  ::)).  I noticed Jean, the top chook, doing something odd. She was sitting perched (with no legs, you know the form) and she stretched her head and neck up and back and opened her beak for all the world as if to crow, but no sound came out. She repeated this several times.

She is otherwise very fit and perky or I might wonder if she had something stuck in her throat - but could she have been yawning? Chickens have such extraordinary internal plumbing for their breathing that I have no idea whether they yawn or not  :nowink:  . Any observations gratefully received!

Probably just trying to swallow something, possibly a feather which had come out while preening.

Ive seen them doing it at night on the coop-cam , i think they are moving food from the crop to their gizzard. :)

Mine do this sometimes too.
I have come to the conclusion (in my hen's case) that it is caused by eating their food too hot!
I sometimes pour boiling water on the pellets to make a sort of porridge and if I put it out a little too early they yawn later on in the day.
I not been doing this recently and the yawning has stopped.

I think with gapes the beak is slightly open all the time, the yawn i have seen is beak open wide and a quick stretch to tip a bit more fuel down to the boiler room  :D
