Hi i am new to here. Im hoping someone can help me. I have some young chickens who have developed a sore eye. It is only the 1 eye, which is swollen shut and weeping. They keep scratching at the eye. They have no other symptons, no nasil discharge and no breathing difficultys!
I have never encountered this before and wonderd if anyone had any advice? Many Thanks.

Hi lj and welcome

Are you saying that a number of yourchickensd each have an infection in just one eye  :?:

Bathe the eye(s) with some warm water with a little salt disolved in it(some very dilute luke warm tea is good too) using a clean piece of cotton wool for each problem eye.  If it doesn't resolve in a day or so they may need some antibiotics :!:

Thanks for the welcome. It is several birds that have it. Have been bathing the eyes. It just seems strange to me that on each bird only the 1 eye is affected! I thought i would see if anyone had some idea of what it is. My vets are not very good at diagnosin things in chickens!

are you on barley straw or sawdust as bedding? but id take them to the vet anyways its strange they should all have it only the one eye  :?

Sounds like an infection -needs antibiotics, you could do a phone around of local vets maybe one in another practice could help. Prob needs Baytril for all of them.

Thankyou for your replies. I use a mixtute of shavings and straw as bedding. I took them to a vet last night, after much serching for 1 that had good experience with chickens!! Any way the vet was still unsure as to what the problem is! He found it very strange as to why it is just the 1 eye in each bird! They are now on some antibiotics, hopefully these will work.
