Sweetcorn side shoots?
« on: June 16, 2013, 22:37 »
My sweetcorn (Swift F1) appears to be developing side shoots from the base?

I'm sure all my previous sweetcorn had single stems - never seen this before. Anyone know what's going on??

They are happy plants! I leave them alone, so long as you have them in good rich soil, they will help the plant grow fat cobs that ripen nicely and increase the yield.

They're called tillers, and you don't have to do anything with them...................Rarely they produce an extra cob - but I'm pretty sure you won't this year  ::)

Mine did that last year too, also Swift, and I did indeed a get a couple of extra cobs which was a nice treat. This year they're doing terribly! I think I put them out too early...  ::)
