I would put in a mixture of soil and sand.  Someone on a previous thread suggested mixing in a little Diatom powder too.

You might find they prefer to find a patch - somewhere in the garden - of earth. ;)

my chooks always seem to pick their own spots, once you know where they bathe i would advise you to put down a little diatom so they can self administer it to keep the critters at bay :D

I've made mine today in an old tyre. Put in potting compost, sand, bonfire ash and some Smite mite powder. Not seen them in it yet though!

Hi - I went to a local shop that had an offer on and bought some kids play sand for a few pounds and kept adding it to their dust spot, at first they were suspicious, but, if you do not put too much down initially they get used to it, I also included some louse powder, although over sprinkle and they do not visit it for a day or so - you win some you loose some.  Happy bathing.. :)

They like plain ol' dirt, the drier the better.  They will make an almighty mess with it, but oh, they love it.  Get ready to replenish it often!
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

Mine have a few dirt ones scattered around their run - which one they use depends on their mood I suspect. They appear to be tunnelling to Australia under the coop.
