Bumblefoot
« on: July 27, 2007, 22:53 »
Hello ... am looking for some advice. Although I have had chickens in one way or another since 1985 I have never had a chicken with bumblefoot until a week ago when I noticed that one of our chickens (Speckles) had what looked like the start of bumblefoot on one of her toe pads (NOT the ball of her foot) ... we picked her up and could see a small black dot in the middle of the (pretty small) lump. We have been putting a mixture of vaseline and honey on it every night just as she goes to bed but haven't wrapped it yet. The lump has gone whiter now - we think that this must be the pus rising to the surface.

My questions are....

Can it just go away without needing to be lanced?

If it needs to be lanced how is this done? I think we would call a vet but Speckles is very tame but doesn't our least comfortable-with-people hen and we don't want to overstress her - putting the vaseline on alone is something she isn't keen on!

Does anyone else have any failsafe bumblefoot remedies?

Should we bandage up her foot in the day and if we don't can the treatment still work?

Any responses are gratefully received! We love Speckles and don't want her to go lame so the quicker we can get this treated the better!

My pet rat had Bumblefoot and I treated it with Calendula Cream from the health food shop, if it worked for him I think it would work for your hen.  I am sure there are other treatments available but this is an inexpensive cream that has worked for me.

it takes a while to go, Good luck
