Usually caused by fuel being left in the machine over winter, which then becomes stale and tarnishes the internal chambers within the carb.
2 stroke fuel can "go off" very quickly so it's a good idear to drain out any from the fuel tank, and then start the machine to run it dry before putting it away for the winter. You may be lucky and get it going without having to strip the carb..... :)

Thanks Gwiz - had left fuel in over winter, I will start afresh with new oil (synthetic)  and petrol this time with the correct ratio.  Also thanks to Rangerkris.

If you are about Gwiz - I have have replaced the fuel with the correct mix and the strimmer runs OKish.  But there is one more problem - pick up from tick-over to full speed the engine dies even when hot.  If the speed is increased very slowly then max speed can be achieved but the power seems down - bit of tough grass and the engine will stop.

Is the engine running too lean?  Your comments please.

you need to open the "H" screw anti-clockwise a tad (1/4 to 1/2 a turn )

Thanks Gwiz, where do I find the 'H' screw? - only ever had operating instructions, no service instructions.

Sorry, I should have said! :)
On the carburettor there is often 3 screws. One is marked"H", one is marked "S" the other isn't marked usually, but is sometimes marked "T" and turning this one will increase the "T"ickover speed.
The "H" screw I call "H"igh speed,
The "S" screw I call "S"low speed.
I hope this helps :)

Greenhead —

I'd very much appreciate details of how to get that tool from Ryobi.  My wife's strimmer — she likes the self-start, and can't manage my REAL MAN'S Stihl! — is showing clear signs of incorrect mixture, but I can't get in to the screws to move them.
