Gasping Chick 7wks - Tylan?
« on: August 21, 2009, 11:36 »
Hello All  :(

Another of my 7 week old Welsummer chicks is now gasping/sneezing.

Her eyes are clear, no bubbling, although one is closed (when she occasionally opens it a bit it's clear, though)

She is eating/drinking etc, but not doing much else.

She's booked into the vets this afternoon, and it's a pretty safe bet they know nothing about poultry, so is the general consensus that I should just tell him she needs Tylan? Failing that Baytril?

One died a couple of days ago  :( and there is a third so far showing no signs, but I'd like to bring some home for her too, just to be safe.

They have ACV and crushed garlic in their water, but poor little miss needs a bit more help than that.

I think they caught a chill after leaving broody on Saturday, and it's secondary infection. Or so I'm hoping - touchwood nothing more sinister, ie Mareks, asp., etc.

Any advice really appreciated, thanks.

I don't know Rob, this has come on pretty suddenly.

I've only had them for 6 days, so am feeling pretty awful about it  :(
They're 7 weeks today.

The symptoms resemble a nasty cold - sneezing, snotty nostrils, gasping (although not constantly) and huddling up. She's been cuddling on a hot water bottle and it does seem to give her some relief/comfort.

Her one sister died on Wednesday, but the other seems fine so far.

I'll put it to the vet though, thanks for the suggestion Rob.

I must say it was only the gasping that stuck out but the rest sounds more mycoplasmosis (or whatever it is  ::)).

Hopefully just a course of anti-bio will see them right. How many have you got ?

Don't forget to ask for enough for the whole flock.

Thank you, Rob.

There were just the 3 of them, kept separately from the big girls in a large dog cage.

They're living in the kitchen at the moment.

I'm going to ask for Soluble Tylan, as that will go a long way and sounds easy to use and effective. Hope they have it

Fingers crossed it's not too late for poor little girl. She looked great last night, I thought she was better.

Thanks Rob  :)

sounds like myco, it can come on pretty fast, tylan will be fine, or Baytril. Treat asap though. :)

It does, doesn't it Foxy? Been swotting up on it all day.

Well her appointment is in an hour and I'm not confident that the vet will have any idea - when I booked the appointment and said it was for a hen, the nurse asked "a WHAT?"
"a hen"...."a WHAT?" had to say it 3 times, it don't sound promising eh?  :D

Never mind, I'll just have to tell him  :D

Thanks very much, both.

But how did the chicks get it, that's what I don't understand

Quick update..

The vet gave her Baytril orally but doesn't expect her to last the night, nor do I  :(
She's in a very, very bad way. Has gone downhill steadily all day.

I have some Baytril to give her sister, who will be the last of the three. She keeps gently pecking her sick sister bless, she knows something is wrong.

It has been horrible.

Could these chicks have already been infected when I got them on Saturday? I just can't fathom how they got it, what I've done wrong and why it's killing them so quickly?
Within two days of showing signs they are dead  :(

so sorry you are having such a bad time of it! i too had this happen early this year where i bought 2 pol hens and lost both to a respiratory desease! i know the supplier well and know their stock is healthy so knew it was down to the move to the new environment and that the other girls werent giving them an easy time! the stress of moving to a new home can quickly reduce a chicks immune system! as well as a new environment having lots of different things to challenge the immune system! if she lasts the night try and give her some life guard tonic which helps in times of stress and desease!fingers crossed for her
I also found this site helpful too!

I have just bought a bottle of Orego-stim (not cheap by any means) but it says it has been proven to reduce incidences of coccidiosis and other gut problems. It is also for periods of challenge e.g. moult, disease, transportation stress, fox scares etc. It is mixed in water.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I have both orego-stim and the life guard tonic! just mentioned the life guard cause the orego-stim seems to be more aimed at gut problems such as cocci etc, where as the life guard in this instance is more an all round tonic recommended for times of stress, moult, desease and a must for ex battery hens.
