 :) Thanks everybody but still not this worm/grub.  Other half has just gone up the plot (I'm supposedly doing housework prior to a visit to the dentist!) and has taken a camera.  Daughter will help with adding to this site so we may get results then, fingers crossed.  Again thanks.  By the way, people on the plots don't know what it is either!

If it has a saddle, it's a worm.

Probably a grey worm.

You could well be right with the worm theory and particularly the grey worm (hubby has now shown photos he has taken but daughter not about to post).  It is dark grey in colour, looks like a big caterpillar, the texture is like an elephant's trunk - this is when it is curled up and about half an inch in size.  When moved it expands and does look like a worm.  If it is a grey worm are these harmful as I can't find any real info on them.
